Canada Geese on campus
Canada Geese begin nesting and mating in spring, often becoming aggressive and territorial in the process.
Canada Geese are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994, as per Canadian law.
Safety Tips
- – Maintain a safe distance from geese and their nesting sites at all times. Use alternative routes if possible.
- – Geese are highly protective of their nests and mates, and may become aggressive if they feel threatened.
- – Hissing or honking may be warning signs that you are too close.
- – Back away immediately if a goose approaches you, especially if its head is lowered and its neck is outstretched.
- – Avoid turning your back on the goose as you back away, and be mindful of your footing.
- – Do not feed or interact with geese.
The risk of avian flu risk to the general public is low and there have not been known cases of the current virus being spread from human to human. For more information, please refer to the EHS Avian Influenza webpage.
