(CONTAMINATION CRITERIA)
- If the equipment will be used in a radiation permitted room/area, the level of removable contamination should be under 3 Bq/cm2 for most of the radionuclides used in U of T (meet the criteria from Appendix C from the CNSC Document Licence Application C-222).
- If the equipment will be removed from a radiation permitted area/room for reuse or disposal, the level of removable contamination should be under 0.5 Bq/cm2 for all beta and gamma emitters and under 0.05 Bq/cm2 for all alpha emitters averaged over an area of 100 cm2.
- If the fixed contamination cannot be reduced to a level less than 0.5 microSv/h measured at a distance of less than 0.5 m from the equipment, the equipment cannot be reused in an unauthorized radiation area or disposed of as regular waste.
- If it will be reused in an authorized radiation area the equipment should be marked with radiation sign. If the dose rate is above 2.5 microSv/h, the level of radiation field should be marked on the equipment
- If the equipment is intended for disposal and the levels of fixed or removable contamination cannot be reduced to below the criteria (from points 2 and 3) on the equipment/parts of the equipment, the equipment or parts of the equipment will be disposed of as radioactive waste.
- If the equipment/parts of the equipment intended for disposal can be decontaminated to meet the criteria (from points 2 and 3), the equipment/parts of the equipment will be disposed of as regular waste. Before doing so, be sure that the equipment/parts of the equipment meets the applicable criteria for biological or chemical hazardous material, if applicable.
