Used and old waste gas cylinders of all type are produced through many of the operations and labs on campus. The best method of handling old cylinders involves purchasing cylinders from companies who have a return policy in place. The following procedure should be followed for gas cylinders which cannot be return to the manufacturer or supplier.
Buildings with a Designated Chemical Waste Storage Area
- While using a gas cylinder ensure that the manufacturer/ supplier labels are protected so the waste cylinder can easily be identify. Unknown cylinders are much more expensive and harder to find disposal routes
- Take the cylinder to the Chemical Waste Storage Area for your building and label for waste disposal with the Chemical Waste labels supplied by EPS. Please make sure you don’t cover the original label on the cylinder.
- Remember a gas cylinder is not considered empty until the valve has been removed
