As communicated on April 24, 2019, all University of Toronto laboratories must comply to the WHMIS regulation, R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 860. It is the Principal Investigator’s responsibility to ensure that:
- All lab members have up-to-date WHMIS training
- All chemicals are stored properly
- All hazardous chemicals with old supplier labels have been affixed with compliance labels
- All hazardous chemicals that have been transferred to secondary containers have workplace labels
- All lab members know how to access Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
All UofT laboratories storing, producing and/or using hazardous chemicals will undergo a WHMIS Compliance Inspection conducted by the University’s WHMIS Compliance Officer. Principal Investigators (or their lab designates) will be contacted to schedule the inspection. This is an informal visit to ensure that your lab is in compliance with the WHMIS 2015 regulation; it is not an inspection from an external regulator. If any noncompliance is observed, the WHMIS Compliance Officer will provide feedback on how to resolve the issue and then follow up with your lab to ensure that the issue has been resolved. The inspection will cover 4 items:
- UofT WHMIS training for all lab members within the last year
- Proper storage of chemicals
- UofT compliance labels on chemicals with old supplier labels
- Workplace labels on all hazardous materials that have been transferred to another container
