Laser Safety Training Courses

On this webpage, you will find a description of the laser safety training courses offered by the U of T Environmental Health and Safety. At the bottom of the page, you will find a link to the registration page. Based on the laser you will be operating you may not need the full laser safety training. If, after reading this description, you are still unsure which course you need to take for your research, check with your supervisor, consult the training matrix or contact Gustavo Moriena

FULL LASER SAFETY TRAINING – users of open beam class 3B and 4

Laser Safety Theory (EHS736 online and EHS737 in class)

This course discusses in details topics like, properties of light, stimulated and spontaneous emissions, basics of lasers, biological effects, hazards controls, etc. The laser safety theory is offered in two equivalent modalities.

EHS736 is recommended for people with previous experience working with class 3B and class 4 lasers. It has a pre-training quiz of 3 questions that need to be answered correctly in 3 minutes. It also has a final quiz of 10 questions and 80 % of them have to be answered correctly. Failing any of the quizzes will require the participant to register for the other modality, EHS737.

EHS737 is recommended for people with no previous experience working with class 3B and class 4 lasers.

Upon completion of EHS 736 or EHS 737, the participants must take the Laser Safety Practical training, after which they will be authorized to operate class 3B and class 4 lasers.

Laser Safety Practical (EHS738 in the laser training laboratory)

This course is mandatory for people who completed the Laser Safety Theory courses (either EHS736 or EHS737). In this course the participants will learn the basics of laser safety on the optical table, such as alignment of a laser beam, measuring laser beam power, measuring the reflectivity of material with different coatings, etc. During the practical training incidents/accidents cases will be analysed. At the end of the laser safety practical training, the participants will write a comprehensive laser safety test. After completing this training, the participants will be authorized to operate any type of laser.

The full laser safety training is valid for 3 years.

OTHER LASER SAFETY TRAINING COURSES

Laser Safety Refresher (EHS735 online)

This course is mandatory for people with an expired full laser safety training or an expired laser safety refresher. It is intended to update laser users on the basics of laser safety and new regulatory requirements. The laser safety refresher is also valid for 3 years.

Safe Use of Fiber-coupled Lasers (EHS734 online)

This course is intended for people working with class 3B or 4 lasers when the beam is delivered through fibre optic. The course discusses the basics of lasers, and specific cases and hazards that are more common when experiments are performed using fibre-coupled lasers. Users of class 3B or class 4 fibre-coupled lasers can opt to take this course or if they prefer, the full laser training.

Laser Safety Awareness (EHS739 online)

This course is mandatory for people working in a laser lab when the laser is ON, for example preparing samples or performing data analysis, etc. This course discusses the basics of laser safety and hazards control. People who take this course are not authorized to operate class 3B or class 4 lasers.

Closed Beams and Low-Class Lasers (EHS732 online)

This course is recommended for people working with class 2, class 3R or enclosed laser systems. It will give the participants an introduction to the basics of laser safety and regulatory requirements for these types of lasers. People who take this course are not authorized to operate open beam class 3B or class 4 lasers.

Laser Safety Training for Permit Holders (EHS755 online)

This course is required for the laser permit holders of open beam class 3B or class 4 lasers. It discusses laser safety classes, biological effects, hazard controls, Permit Holder responsibilities, etc. Permit holders who took other laser safety courses, such as full laser training or laser safety awareness are not required to take this course. Permit Holders who take only this course are not authorized to operate open beam class 3B or class 4 lasers.
