Code General Packaging Requirements

B1 leak-proof container designed to withstand autoclaving temperatures when steam sterilization used

B2 autoclavable bags displaying biohazard warning symbol (not for sharps) supplied by researcher

C1
leakproof container (no biohazard bags) and no mixing of incompatible chemicals, chemical waste label completed & applied

C2
leakproof plastic container (no garbage bags) – label and treat as chemical waste

G1
20 litre white pails provided by Facilities and Services (Caretaking), must be able to close lid – nothing protruding

P1
if on-site autoclave unavailable, handled by external contractor and must be packaged using contractor’s protocols

R1 radioactive solid waste container, yellow, lined with yellow bag, supplied by EHS office, tag completed

R2a
radioactive liquid waste container (green tag < 30-day half-life) supplied by EHS office, tag completed

R2b
radioactive liquid waste container (blue tag > 30-day half-life<90 days) supplied by EHS office, tag completed

R2c
radioactive liquid waste container (yellow tag >90-day half-life) supplied by EHS office, tag completed

R2d
contact EHS office at 416.978.7000

R3
packaged in leak-proof container and clearly marked for radioactive disposal

R4
decontaminate empty glassware before placing into G1 container. If unable to decontaminate contact EHS at 416.978.7000

S1
yellow U of T approved B-D Guardian sharps containers (model # 300439 -1.4 litres, 300460 – 3.1 litres, or 300466 -7.6 litres)

S2
chemical must be deactivated prior to placing into S1 container

S3
collected in S1 container but labelled as radioactive waste with isotopes and activity
